Dcraw for Windows 64 Bit: Download, Install, and Use the Best Raw Converter

dcraw is an open-source computer program which is able to read numerous raw image format files, typically produced by mid-range and high-end digital cameras. dcraw converts these images into the standard TIFF and PPM image formats. This conversion is sometimes referred to as developing a raw image (by analogy with the process of film development) since it renders raw image sensor data (a "digital negative") into a viewable form.

Development of dcraw began on February 23, 1997. Version 1.0 was released in revision 1.18, on May 5, 2000.[3] Versions up to 3.15 used the name Canon PowerShot Converter, starting with v3.40 the name was Raw Photo Decoder, switching to Raw Photo Decoder "dcraw" in v5.70. Version 8.86 supported 300 cameras.[1]

dcraw is built around the Unix philosophy. The program is a command line tool which takes a list of raw image files to process, along with any image adjustment options desired. dcraw also serves as the basis for various high-level raw image-processing applications (such as viewers and converters), both free and open source software as well as proprietary software.

Several GUI front-ends for dcraw are available. These applications use dcraw as a back-end to do the actual processing of raw images, but present a graphical interface with which the image processing options can be adjusted.

This software is very advanced but also very tricky sometimes to handle. In the beginning when I started to write macros to AIJ it didn't work at all because of the heavy memory demand. I have a 20 Megapixel camera and I could load about sixty 16 bit images or thirty 32 bit images. Then all my 8 GByte memory was used. Now I have learned how to handle this and use the hard drive more intense to free up ram memory. I strongly recommend windows 64 bit system and at least 8 GByte of ram if you working with a DSLR camera.

Update:If you have a new camera camera it could happen that the DCRaw couldn't read its raw files correct. Then you need to update the dcraw.exe file with latest version. Google for DCRaw Windows 10 if you have a Windows computer, then no need of the CygWin.

See here how it looks in my DCRaw directory after I have updated the dcraw.exe file, I have renamed the old files, don't erase them, maybe you need them in future. No need any longer for the cygwin1.dll file because this dcraw.exe file is compiled direct for Windows system.

Runtime errors are Free Opener errors that occur during "runtime". Runtime is pretty self-explanatory; it means that these EXE errors are triggered when dcraw.exe is attempted to be loaded either when Free Opener is starting up, or in some cases already running. Runtime errors are the most common form of EXE error you will encounter using Free Opener.

In most cases, dcraw.exe runtime errors occurring while the program is running will result in the program terminating abnormally. Most of these dcraw.exe error messages mean that Free Opener was either unable to locate this file on startup, or the file is corrupt, resulting in a prematurely-aborted startup process. Generally, Free Opener will be unable to start without resolving these errors.

Finding the source of the dcraw.exe error is key to properly resolving these errors. Although most of these EXE errors affecting dcraw.exe will happen during startup, occasionally you will encounter a runtime error while using Free Opener 1. This can occur due to poor programming on behalf of EZ Freeware, conflicts with other software or 3rd-party plug-ins, or caused by damaged and outdated hardware. Also, these types of dcraw.exe errors can occur if it has been accidentally moved, deleted, or corrupted by a malware infection. Thus, it's critical to make sure your anti-virus is kept up-to-date and scanning regularly.

If you're encountering one of the error messages above, follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve your dcraw.exe issue. These troubleshooting steps are listed in the recommended order of execution.

When the first two steps haven't solved your issue, it might be a good idea to run Windows Update. Many dcraw.exe error messages that are encountered can be contributed to an outdated Windows Operating System. To run Windows Update, please follow these easy steps:

If none of the previous three troubleshooting steps have resolved your issue, you can try a more aggressive approach (Note: Not recommended for amateur PC users) by downloading and replacing your appropriate dcraw.exe file version. We maintain a comprehensive database of 100% malware-free dcraw.exe files for every applicable version of Free Opener. Please follow the steps below to download and properly replace you file:

GEEK TIP : We must emphasize that reinstalling Windows will be a very time-consuming and advanced task to resolve dcraw.exe problems. To avoid data loss, you must be sure that you have backed-up all of your important documents, pictures, software installers, and other personal data before beginning the process. If you are not currently backing up your data, you need to do so immediately.

CAUTION : We strongly advise against downloading and copying dcraw.exe to your appropriate Windows system directory. EZ Freeware typically does not release Free Opener EXE files for download because they are bundled together inside of a software installer. The installer's task is to ensure that all correct verifications have been made before installing and placing dcraw.exe and all other EXE files for Free Opener. An incorrectly installed EXE file may create system instability and could cause your program or operating system to stop functioning altogether. Proceed with caution.

UPDATE 3: I tried: (1) reinstalling Fiji to Documents, (2) reinstalling Fiji to C:/Program Files, (3) updating the ij.jar file from 1.53t to 1.54b, (4) reinstalling the DCRaw plugin (from GitHub - ij-plugins/ijp-dcraw: ImageJ plugin to open camera raw images using dcraw), and (5) creating a new JAVA_HOME environment variable that points to the Java 17 folder (Frequently Asked Questions), but I keep getting the exception message below both before and after every step.

The DCRaw reader plugin runs dcraw_emu executable (dcraw_emu.exe on Windows) behind the scenes to convert DNG to TIFF and then read that converted TIFF. Here is an example of the command line options that correspond to plugin options in previous post
